A Walk Downtown: Tacoma's Plywood Mural Art

How are you doing? Hanging in there? These are strange times, right?

All sorts of emotions here - feeling a bit trapped, tired, and optimistic about some return normalcy in the near future…and then back to being frustrated and pessimistic. Ha! One of my least favorite parts of all this is the ambiguity of it all - nobody seems to know how what and when.

However, we’re all in this together and I feel lucky we have a strong community here in Tacoma. One thing that was encouraging lately was all the murals in downtown Tacoma. Many stores had to close down during the quarantine and to keep their stores safe, the store owners boarded up their storefronts with plywood. Rather than having plain plywood, local artists painted murals on the plywood as part of a Rapid Mural Program. And now there is a small art walk on Pacific Avenue (and a few other places downtown). We took a walk on Saturday to check it out and thought I’d share our photos.

We just did a small walk where most of the murals are located - we parked near Harmons on Pacific Avenue then walked that stretch of stores until Zeek’s Pizza. The art was lovely and then there were tulips blooming and the sun was shining (oh, and we so the light rail trains, found puddles, and some leaves…you know, super cool things). It was a short, beautiful walk and totally refreshing to do something beyond the neighborhood.

Below my photos and then further below is the Facebook link and a video as well.
